Clinicians studying for the interventional cardiology boards, or experienced interventional cardiologists dealing with rare complications or facing uncommon anatomical anomalies, can now turn to an app to expand their knowledge. Cathlas is available in the Apple App Store. (An Android version is not currently available.) Itsik Ben-Dor, MD, associate director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories and interventional cardiology fellowship program director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, worked with his sons to develop the free app. He unveiled itWednesday during the hospital’s weekly cath conference. As its name implies, Cathlas is designed to be a comprehensive “Atlas” tool. Ben-Dor has acquired a large collection of angiography video clips and images that he has shown over the years during the cath conference, at the annual Cardiovascular Research Technologies (CRT) meeting and during other educational and training events. Interventional cardiologists can use the app, which has more than 700 video clips and images, “to acquire fundamental knowledge and promote better decision-making in the clinical setting,” Ben-Dor said. “The progress of technology allows delivery of a collection of rare and important video images to users in a practical way that cannot be delivered via textbooks or peer-reviewed journals,” he wrote in the app’s description. Ben-Dor said he first approached companies about developing the app, but their asking price was high. So he asked his son Shahar Ben-Dor to develop it. Another son, Yair Ben-Dor, drew the images that are used to depict categories of videos, such as acute coronary syndrome, anomalies of coronary origin, congenital heart disease and structural. Itsik Ben-Dor pointed out that board exams for both general and interventional cardiology include videos of rare cases that are not often found in general textbooks or online supplements. The app allows interventional cardiologists to email images and video clips to Ben-Dor. He said each video would be reviewed before it is added to the app’s collection.
